EXW vs FOB for Lockers: Incoterms Explained for Importers
For importers, exw vs fob for lockers is a practical decision about export customs, freight control, insurance, risk, and total landed cost. The right term helps you compare quotations clearly, plan container loading, and protect your resale margin when you import lockers from Turkey.

This matrix follows the practical allocation under Incoterms® 2020. Always write the named place and version in the sales contract. The International Chamber of Commerce Incoterms® rules explain the official framework for costs, tasks, and risk.
EXW vs FOB for Lockers: The Core Difference
EXW: Maximum Buyer Control
EXW means Ex Works. Loxmet makes the goods available at its factory in Istanbul. You arrange collection, export customs, loading coordination, international freight, insurance if required, import clearance, duties, taxes, and final delivery.
EXW can work well when you already have:
- A trusted Turkish freight forwarder
- Export customs support
- Negotiated container or truck rates
- Control over marine insurance
- Experience with loading and documentation
The important point is loading responsibility. Under strict EXW logic, the seller is not required to load the goods onto your collecting vehicle or clear them for export. Your forwarder must coordinate these steps with the factory.
For a TIR shipment, EXW is possible because EXW applies to any transport mode. However, confirm who will load the truck, prepare export documents, and manage customs before booking. For road shipments, FCA or DAP can sometimes create a clearer responsibility structure than FOB.
FOB: Shared Control for Sea Shipments
FOB means Free On Board. Loxmet handles export customs and delivers the lockers on board the vessel at the agreed origin port. You select and pay for the main sea freight, normally through your freight forwarder. You also arrange insurance if you want broader protection.
Risk transfers when the goods are loaded on board the vessel at the origin port. It does not transfer when the container arrives at your warehouse.
FOB is usually practical for importers who:
- Buy full containers
- Have a preferred ocean carrier or forwarder
- Want the seller to manage Turkish export clearance
- Want control over the main freight rate
- Prefer to arrange their own cargo insurance
FOB is a sea and inland-waterway term. Do not use FOB as the default wording for a TIR-only road shipment. Use a suitable road-compatible Incoterm and name the exact collection or delivery point.
CIF: Seller-Arranged Freight and Basic Insurance
CIF means Cost, Insurance and Freight. The seller arranges export clearance, loads the goods on board the vessel, pays the freight to the named destination port, and arranges the minimum insurance required by the rule.
CIF can simplify the buying process, especially if you do not have a freight contract from Istanbul and you would otherwise arrange cif shipping metal furniture yourself. However, risk still transfers to you at the origin port when the goods are on board. The seller pays the freight to destination, but this does not mean the seller carries all transport risk until arrival.
Minimum CIF insurance can be limited. For valuable, mixed, or project shipments, ask your insurer or forwarder whether additional cargo cover is appropriate.

CFR and DAP in practical terms
CFR: Freight Included, Insurance Excluded
CFR means Cost and Freight. It is similar to CIF, but the seller has no obligation to arrange cargo insurance.
Loxmet or the seller pays freight to the named destination port, while you handle import clearance and normally arrange insurance. Risk transfers at the origin port when the goods are on board the vessel.
CFR can be useful if you already have an insurance policy or prefer to control the coverage. Compare the freight amount against your own forwarder quotation before deciding.
DAP: Delivered to a Named Place
DAP means Delivered at Place. The seller arranges transport to the named destination, but the buyer normally handles import customs, duties, taxes, unloading, and destination requirements.
DAP can reduce logistics work for the importer. It can also make the quotation easier to understand because transport is arranged to a defined location. Confirm whether unloading is included. DAP does not normally require the seller to unload the arriving vehicle. This is incoterms explained for furniture importers in practice: the term decides who arranges which task, not who owns the goods.

Why EXW Istanbul Is Loxmet’s Default
Loxmet normally quotes EXW Istanbul because many international importers already work with their own freight forwarders and customs partners. This lets you control:
- Container or TIR booking
- Freight negotiation
- Insurance selection
- Consolidation with other Turkish products
- Destination routing
- Delivery schedule
- Total landed cost calculation
In practice, your forwarder collects the finished lockers from the Loxmet factory, coordinates export customs with the required parties, and arranges onward transport.
Loxmet can also quote FOB Istanbul or CIF on request when these terms better fit your purchasing process. Share your destination port, transport mode, product list, quantity, and requested delivery term so the quotation can be prepared correctly.
Loxmet supplies more than 100 standard products, including standard-size metal lockers, office cabinets, charging lockers, PPE storage, benches, shelving, and custom-made units. A popular standard product is the single-tier two-door locker.
Calculate Total Landed Cost Before Comparing Prices
A low EXW price is not automatically the lowest delivered cost. Compare the full shipment:
- Product price
- Export loading and customs
- Inland transport in Turkey
- Ocean freight or TIR transport
- Insurance
- Port and terminal charges
- Import customs broker
- Duties and taxes
- Destination handling
- Final warehouse delivery
- Unloading and storage
Your total landed cost should be calculated per locker, not only per container. Product dimensions and loading direction directly affect the result. Use the container loading for lockers calculation guide to review planning quantities for 20-foot containers, 40-foot high-cube containers, and TIR trucks.

For custom dimensions, special colours, benches, or mixed compartment layouts, request a loading review through Loxmet custom manufacturing. A loading plan should confirm unit quantities, packaging, stacking position, total weight, and remaining space.

Incoterms do not decide payment timing, ownership transfer, product specifications, or dispute terms, so include these points separately in your contract.
Importer Questions, Answered
What does EXW mean for a locker order?
EXW means Loxmet makes the lockers available at its Istanbul factory. You arrange collection, export clearance, freight, insurance, import clearance, and final delivery.
Who pays for loading at EXW?
Under the strict EXW rule, the buyer is responsible for loading onto the collecting vehicle. Agree the practical loading arrangement with the supplier and forwarder before collection.
What is the difference between FOB and CIF?
Under FOB, the buyer arranges and pays the main sea freight. Under CIF, the seller arranges and pays freight to the destination port and provides minimum insurance. Under both terms, risk transfers when goods are on board at the origin port.
Who arranges insurance under CIF?
The seller arranges minimum insurance for the buyer’s benefit. Ask whether the cover is sufficient for your cargo value and route. Additional insurance can be arranged when required.
Is EXW or FOB better for a first container?
FOB is often easier for a first sea container because the seller handles export customs and port loading. EXW can deliver better control and pricing when you already have a reliable forwarder in Turkey.
What does DAP mean for lockers?
DAP means the seller arranges transport to the named destination. The buyer handles import customs, duties, taxes, and usually unloading. Confirm the exact delivery address and unloading responsibility.
When does risk transfer under FOB?
Risk transfers when the lockers are loaded on board the vessel at the named origin port. It does not wait until the container reaches your destination.
Can I use EXW for a TIR truck shipment instead of a container?
Yes. EXW applies to road transport. Confirm loading, export customs, truck collection time, documents, and insurance with your forwarder. FOB is not the normal choice for a road-only TIR shipment.
Choose the Right Term for Your Locker Shipment
Choose EXW when you want maximum freight control and already have strong logistics support. Choose FOB when you want Loxmet to handle Turkish export clearance and port loading for a sea shipment. Choose CIF or CFR when seller-arranged ocean freight is more convenient. Choose DAP when you prefer delivery to a named place while handling import clearance yourself.
Request a quotation with your product list, quantities, destination, transport mode, and preferred Incoterm. Loxmet can compare EXW Istanbul with FOB Istanbul or CIF on request and support your container or TIR planning with clear commercial information.
