When buyers ask what type of paint needs to be used for metal lockers, the practical answer is usually a factory-applied powder coating designed for steel.
Powder coating provides the best balance of durability, corrosion protection, appearance, and cost for most commercial locker projects. The right system still depends on where the lockers will be installed, how they will be cleaned, and whether moisture, chemicals, or heavy wear are part of normal operations.
Why powder coating is the standard for metal lockers
Powder coating is a dry finishing process. Electrostatic charge is used to apply powdered resin to prepared steel, and the coating is then cured in an oven. During curing, the powder melts and forms a continuous protective layer across the locker body, doors, frames, and shelves.
For metal locker manufacturers, powder coating is generally preferred over conventional liquid paint because it creates a tougher, more consistent finish. For new metal lockers, though, liquid paint is usually less desirable than powder coating. It can be more vulnerable to runs, inconsistent film thickness, and damage during use if the application and curing process are not tightly controlled.
